A fleeting feeling

a fleeting feeling
of permanence—
my feet set
on this parking lot
of steaming concrete

Streetlights, Poetry of Urban Life in Modern English Tanka, 2009

A cool front recently stormed through, meaning that the highs were "only" in the upper 80s. But I suspect we'll have quite a few more days of steaming concrete before autumn truly sets in.

  1. Ah yes, that feeling that it is so hot - you are stuck to the road - permanently. A layered and thoughtful tanka.

that's right, wendy, the feeling of being momentarily "parked" there. so hot you don't want to move your legs.

  3. Themes of permanence & impermanence again . . . and I can relate to the steaming heat!

  4. Yes, it's similar in theme and subject matter, isn't it, to another one of mine that you recently read?

    Thanks!

  5. "Steaming concrete"...that's some serious heat! Kinda makes me glad for some crisp autumn breezes.

  6. Yes, serious heat! But we've had a bunch of rain recently (5-1/4 inches at our place) and, with that, cooler temps.
